A New Procurement Model for TF-2000 Might be on Table
The SSIK may invent a new solution so the Turkish Navy reaches the TF-2000 Air Defence Destroyer. TurDef understands that some modalities are being discussed. The Defence Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) held in January 2024 was a breakthrough in terms of naval projects. Beginning the Aircraft Carrier design phase drew most of the attention, but there were other decisions about MİLGEM 9-10-11-12 frigates, new landing ships, new-generation mine-hunting ships, and assault boats with national means. No decision was made about the TF-2000 Air Defence Destroyer that the Turkish Navy had long waited for.

Turkish Navy is Preparing Ambitiously for TF-2000
Turkiye's first air defence warfare destroyer, TF-2000, is currently designed at the Design Project Office (DPO) located at Istanbul Shipyard Command. The Ministry of National Defence opened the doors of the Istanbul Shipyard Command to the press and exhibited its facilities and capabilities. The command has multiple capabilities. While the ship design at the command occurs at DPO, the ship is built in the dry dock. In the remaining parts of the shipyard, ship production and maintenance of the systems to be used on the ship take place. For example, the maintenance of engines and weapons used on ships is still carried out on-site. Turkiye primarily needs an air defence destroyer for TCG Anadolu and the Aircraft Carrier it will build in the future. The Navy calculated the future battlefield and determined the requirements for air defence warfare destroyers. The sensors and weapon systems that will be on the ship for the task group it will protect were not discussed as they were not the subject of this visit. One of the most important stages of the visit was to see the design and construction capabilities for TF-2000, the construction of which is expected to start soon with the decision of the Defence Industry Executive Committee (SSİK).

ROKETSAN Delivers AKYA Torpedo to the Turkish Submarines
The Turkish MoD has announced that ROKETSAN has started the delivery of the AKYA 533 mm heavyweight torpedo for the Turkish Navy submarines. A video shared by the Turkish MoD shows two torpedoes being loaded into the TCG Preveze (S-353) submarine tubes. The submarine conducted a test launch on December 27, 2023, with a hit on the target ship (ex-TCG Gazal, ex-USS Sioux). The test with TCG Preveze, modernised with HAVELSAN’s MÜREN CMS, was important in that it marked the operational capability with a live warhead. The Turkish Navy will use AKYA on its Gür-class, Preveze, and new Reis submarines (Type-214TN). Electrically driven counter-rotating propellers propel AKYA and can reach a range of 50 km. The guidance consists of active/passive sonar and fibre-optic cable, which provides increased resistance to countermeasures by allowing the operator to act. Heavy torpedoes are a submarine’s main offensive system, and nationalising such systems provides the advantage of independence in acquisition and the freedom to make necessary adjustments based on feedback.

Turkish Firefighting Method Secures Li-Ion AIP Submarines
Gaziantep Municipality firefighters introduced a new method to extinguish Li-Ion battery fire, which may secure Li-Ion-powered AIP submarines. Gaziantep’s firefighters utilised a new technique to extinguish a fire in a Li-Ion battery-powered electric car. This method might pave the way for the safer use of such Li-Ion batteries on AIP submarines. The method was used on the Turkish TOGG T10X SUV car, which experienced an ignition. A foam-like substance was sprayed on the car to extinguish the fire, and a red-pink-coloured suppressant was sprayed on the battery section of the car to ensure suppression. Fire accidents involving Li-Ion batteries are known to be volatile and very hard to extinguish. Some AIP submarines use such batteries for propulsion and electronics. The limited space of submarines can help control the battery’s damage in the event of an ignition. STM’s STM500 submarine, which is under development for domestic and export use, will use this Li-Ion battery technology. This method and its equipment also have export potential, as most countries without nuclear-powered submarines are opting for submarines with AIP systems to gain an advantage in underwater endurance and low observability.

Upgraded Oruç Reis Frigate Spotted with GÖKDENİZ CIWS
Turkish Navy’s TCG Oruç Reis frigate (F-245) undergoing Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) was spotted with GÖKDENİZ CIWS by the photographer Oğuz Eroğuz. The MLU for Barbaros-class (MEKO-200 TNII) frigates includes the integration of ASELSAN’s GÖKDENİZ CIWS on the front in place of Sea Zenith CIWS as a leg of armament modernisation. GÖKDENİZ and Mk15 Phalanx CIWS have replaced all three Sea Zenith CIWS to improve the ship’s close-range defence capabilities. Compared to its predecessor, the Sea Zenith, which was equipped with four 25 mm autocannons, the GÖKDENİZ CIWS represents a significant leap in capabilities. With its two 35 mm revolver cannons, enhanced by onboard sensors and the ability to use ATOM air-burst ammunition, the GÖKDENİZ offers a substantial expansion in the frigate’s close-range defence capabilities. GÖKDENİZ’s CIWS is equipped with a radar suite, including a MAR-D search radar and a fire control radar with electro-optics. These features are combined with the onboard sensors, enabling the system to operate independently of the ship’s sensors and enhancing its effectiveness in various operational scenarios. The other important feature of GÖKDENİZ is ATOM 35 mm air-burst ammunition, which scatters sub-projectiles at a defined detonation time automatically programmed by the barrel electronics. Air-burst ammunition, which creates a cloud of metal particles, is effective against small and agile targets like cruise missiles, UAVs, and speed boats. The MLU’s other armament improvements include the addition of eight ATMACA anti-ship missiles, RCWS, and electronic warfare systems

Turkiye's First AIP Submarine Joins the EFES Exercise
Turkiye's first Reis Class Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) type submarine, Piri Reis (S 330), will participate in the Efes 2024 exercise. The Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) shared an important post about the Piri Reis (S 330) Submarine, which is counting the days to enter the Navy's inventory. Produced in Turkiye with maximum domestic resources, it has the Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) feature, the ability to operate underwater for weeks without getting on the surface, the ability to operate in secrecy for a long time with low noise navigation capacity, high-speed torpedoes and the ability of guided missiles that can be launched at surface targets. SSB announced that the Piri Reis (S 330) submarine would participate in the EFES 2024 Exercise. When the submarine joins the inventory, the acronym TCG will be added, meaning Turkish Navy Ship. Germany's U-214 submarine was produced under license at Gölcük Shipyard Command. Greece procured the same type of submarine, but the project was suspended for a long time after acoustic and balance problems. Türkiye, on the other hand, made changes to the submarine and prevented these problems from occurring again.

ALPİN Unmanned Helicopter to Go, Naval
TİTRA is jointly working on giving its ALPİN unmanned helicopter the capability to take off from and land on ships with Airbus. TİTRA CEO Abdulkadir Şener stated to Anadolu News Agency that this capability has been developing for months in response to Turkiye’s and other countries’ demands. Şener added that Airbus has experience developing autopilot systems for landing on naval platforms and is interested in jointly working with TİTRA as ALPİN will be first in this segment for the multi-national firm. ALPİN serving with the Turkish Navy opens possibilities for taking loads off S-70 Seahawk helicopters in SAR, logistics, and patrol missions. Due to its small size, ALPİN can be easily fitted into the hangars of existing naval platforms. The unmanned helicopter can be fitted with additional sensors like synthetic aperture radars, as exhibited in IDEF’23. ALPİN might receive other design changes to serve onboard naval platforms, such as a more corrosion-resistant frame. Another example of an unmanned helicopter that is used onboard naval platforms is the American MQ-8C Fire Scout, based on the Bell 407 helicopter. ALPİN has an endurance of nine hours and a payload capacity of 200 kg. While the current mission profile consists of logistics and surveillance, communications relay and close air support are planned for the near future.
