Zitat:GCC MILITARY CHIEFS DISCUSS COOPERATION

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Gulf Arab military chiefs have resumed efforts to increase regional cooperation.

The six Gulf Cooperation Council chiefs of staff began their meeting in Kuwait on Tuesday in an effort to improve cooperation and interoperability. GCC officials said the military chiefs would focus on expanded training and the GCC regional force, Peninsula Shield.

Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have been the leading proponents of the expansion of Peninsula Shield. The force, deployed in Kuwait during the U.S.-led war in Iraq in 2003, numbers around 10,000. Officials said the GCC has sought to expand this to about 22,000 troops.

Kuwaiti Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Fahd Al Amir said the meeting would focus on two elements. He cited GCC military exercises and the development of the Belt of Cooperation air early-warning and communications system. The system was launched in 2002.
