Foreign Ships Harassed Norwegian Ship Near Vietnam Oil Field Report

HANOI -(Dow Jones)- A Norwegian-registered ship conducting seismic surveys near oil blocks off Vietnam's southern coast has been harassed by three foreign ships during the last four days, state media reported Wednesday.

The incident adds to the tension following a series of disputes in the area. Vietnam and China both claim sovereign rights across large areas of the South China Sea believed to hold substantial reserves of oil and gas.

The Viking 2 ship, which is contracted by an oil joint venture between French firm CGG Veritas and PetroVietnam Technical Services Corp., was operating in an area near the Dai Hung oil field, about 270 kilometers off the Vietnamese city of Vung Tau, the Tuoi Tre newspaper said.

Officials at PetroVietnam weren't available for comment.

Last week, Chinese patrol ships threatened a PetroVietnam ship, the Binh Minh 02, and damaged some of the equipment it was using in Block 148, which is near Nha Trang city in central Vietnam, prompting a strong reaction from Vietnam, the Dat Viet newspaper reported Wednesday.

Earlier Wednesday, the Philippines said it had formally protested to China over Chinese plans to anchor an oil rig in the South China Sea, Agence-France Presse reported.

The Philippines Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned China's charge d'affaires on Tuesday to hear the government's concerns about Chinese military action in the West Philippine Sea, AFP said.
