Report: al-Qaida May Target VA Hospitals

WASHINGTON - Al-Qaida may attempt to attack Veterans Affairs hospitals as an alternative to more heavily guarded U.S. military installations, the FBI (news - web sites) and Homeland Security Department warn in a new nationwide terrorism bulletin.
Although U.S. authorities say there is no credible intelligence regarding a specific threat against such hospitals, the bulletin said there have been persistent reports of "suspicious activity" at medical facilities throughout the United States.

2 NAILED IN HERALD SQ. SUBWAY BLAST PLOT

August 28, 2004 -- The convention will be held at Madison Square Garden, located over Penn Station and a block west of the Herald Square subway station. The busy station serves hundreds of thousands of daily riders on the B, D, F, V, N, Q, R and W lines.
Sources said the threat was taken so seriously by officials that it was mentioned this week in a Department of Homeland Security memo.
The plot unraveled when the NYPD's Intelligence Division began conducting surveillance earlier this year on a group of Muslim men in Brooklyn.

Cleric in custody for second day
Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri is spending a second day in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences.
He was arrested on Thursday morning at Belmarsh prison, in south-east London, where he fights extradition to the US.
Police have taken him to Paddington Green station in central London to question him.
