TASHKENT, Uzbekistan - Suicide bombers struck the U.S. and Israeli embassies along with the top prosecutor's office Friday, killing at least two Uzbeks and wounding nine others in nearly simultaneous attacks in the capital of Uzbekistan, a close U.S. ally in the war on terror.
The attacks came as this majority Muslim country is trying 15 suspects allegedly tied to al-Qaida for a wave of violence four months ago that included the first-ever suicide attacks in Central Asia. The defendants in the trial have said the U.S. and Israeli embassies were among the targets their group planned to attack.

Homeland Security Appointee Under Investigation

WASHINGTON — Officials at the Department of Homeland Security are investigating the reinstatement of a top political appointee to the agency who was briefly suspended for failing to disclose ties to a controversial Islamic organization, FOXNews.com has learned.

Faisal Gill, director of policy for intelligence at DHS, was forced to take a few days off in March after sources close to the FBI raised flags about Gill's former position as spokesman for the American Muslim Council.

Cleric Won't Be Charged in Bali Bombings

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesian police dropped plans Wednesday to charge a radical cleric in the 2002 Bali bombings, but said the man Washington accuses of being a terror mastermind in Southeast Asia will remain in jail.
The 65-year-old Abu Bakar Bashir will be charged with other crimes, including heading the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror group and a deadly suicide attack last year on Jakarta's J.W. Marriott Hotel, chief detective Suyitno Landung said. Jemaah Islamiyah was blamed for both attacks.

A South African woman picked up in Texas almost 10 days ago may turn out to be a key, high level al-Qaida operative.
Her name is Farida Goolam Mohamed Ahmed. She was stopped at McAllen Miller International Airport on July 19th headed to New York.

Tribunals Begin for Guantanamo Detainees

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2004 – The tribunals to determine if detainees held at Guantanamo are enemy combatants began today, said Navy Secretary Gordon England.

England said the process will review the status of detainees to determine if they are enemy combatants. If they are deemed not to be enemy combatants, they will be freed, England said.

Third Terror Threat in Week Seen on Web

CAIRO, Egypt - A third threat in a week against America's European allies appeared Friday on an Internet site known for extremist Muslim postings.

The statement claimed to have come from militants in Italy and, like a similar one Wednesday and another on Monday, was signed Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades. Friday's statement, however, dismissed the previous threats as fakes, even though all sounded the same anti-U.S. themes.
