ALGIERS, Algeria — Troops killed one of North Africa's most wanted Islamic militants, who had sought to link his bloody insurgent movement in Algeria to Usama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terror network, the military said Sunday.

The death of Nabil Sahraoui (search), head of the Salafist Group for Call and Combat (search), marked a major victory for Algerian government efforts to suppress Islamic militant violence and left his armed extremist organization with no clear leader.

ALGIERS (Reuters) - The death of Algeria's top militant has robbed al Qaeda of a potentially key ally in north Africa and may pave the way for an end to the region's longest-running Islamic "holy war," analysts said on Monday.

Nabil Sahraoui, leader of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), was killed in a gun battle with the armed forces along with his three top aides in eastern Algeria.
