Zitat:Ore. Town Reacts to Cleric's Indicment
By JEFF BARNARD
The Associated Press
Dean Lawrence used to think it was a joke when he heard all the talk about terrorists thinking about training on a sheep ranch outside his tiny hometown of Bly, Ore.

He was rethinking things Thursday after the arrest of a Muslim cleric in London on charges of trying to establish a terrorist training camp near Bly, a logging and ranching town in the sagebrush-dotted high desert of southern Oregon.

Zitat:Damra is classic' Islamic militant, witness says
Imam's lawyers ask court to bar report by Mideast expert from trial
Friday, May 28, 2004
John Caniglia
Plain Dealer Reporter
The government's chief witness in Fawaz Damra's case says the indicted imam is a "classic case study of a radical Islamic militant" with ties to associates of al-Qaida and other terrorist groups.
...
In 1991, he became the leader of the Islamic Center of Greater Cleveland, the largest mosque in Ohio.

Two years later, Damra met with a federal prosecutor and a detective, telling them that "he was actively involved in recruiting people at the al-Farooq Mosque to go and fight in Afghanistan. He also was present at two training camps, one in Long Island and the other in Connecticut, but did not participate in any training or shooting."

Beyond Madrid: Winning Against Terrorism

Speaker: Goh Chok Tong, prime minister, Republic of Singapore

Moderator: Richard Haass, president, Council on Foreign Relations

Council on Foreign Relations
Washington, D.C.
May 6, 2004
(Note: The question-and-answer session has been transcribed from the meeting. Prime Minister Goh's remarks appear here as prepared for delivery.)

PRIME MINISTER GOH CHOK TONG: The terrorist attacks in Madrid in March this year could become a turning point in the war against terrorism. Unless we make the right moves, I fear the turn could be for the worst.

The choice of the target and the timing of the attack were strategic. The Spanish Socialist party had made the withdrawal of troops from Iraq part of its election platform. Attacking Madrid just before the election was obviously calculated to achieve a strategic effect; as indeed it did when the new government so quickly confirmed its intention to pull out of the U.S. led coalition in Iraq.

This will only encourage the terrorists to exploit political differences within countries and divisions between the U.S. and Europe. We must not let them succeed.

Zitat:Letter from the deep south: Publicising 'jihad' with video discs

Published on May 27, 2004

In a stall recently set up near the historic Krue Se Mosque, a young man is busy selling VCDs, CDs and books that mostly cover various aspects of Islam. One of the VCDs is entitled "Global Jihad Movements".

The stall owner, a native of Pattani who spoke on condition of anonymity, tells me while I glance at his extensive range of products that VCDs on jihad have sold out quickly after the April 28 incident at the mosque which left 32 suspected insurgents dead.
