Palestinian faces 'jihad' charges

MIAMI, March 4 (UPI) -- A federal grand jury in Florida has charged a Palestinian immigrant with trying to foster a "global jihad," the U.S. Justice Department said Thursday.

He already had been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years on the firearm charge, and up to five years each on the charges of false statement, perjury and obstruction of justice, the department said.

Police seize weapons bound for Manila

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine police and soldiers have seized explosives and firearms from a man who said he planned to deliver the weapons to a buyer in a Muslim neighbourhood of the capital.

The arrest comes amid heightened security ahead of national elections on May 10 and an investigation into claims, scorned by the government, that the Abu Sayyaf group of Muslim rebels was responsible for a deadly fire on a Manila ferry a week ago.

SOHAG, Egypt (Reuters) - Egyptian authorities deployed some 1,000 police around a southern town on Saturday to forestall any Muslim-Christian clashes after two Christian men were killed in a street brawl, security sources said.

The Christians were axed to death after a donkey being ridden by a Muslim man slipped on the wet roadway outside their house in the town of Salamoun, about 350 km (220 miles) south of Cairo, they said.
