The Chinese ministry of defence confirmed earlier media reports that one of its navy frigates was spotted near the disputed island of Half Moon Shoal, currently controlled by Philippines.

The stranded Chinese vessel was later identified as a Jianghu-I Class Missile Frigate of the PLAN. Brigadier General Elmer Amon, an official with the Philippine Navy (PN) meanwhile said that his forces are ready to assist the Chinese vessel and its crew, if they are really in distress.
The Half Moon Shoal is a part of the disputed Spratly Islands, the ownership of which is disputed by China, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

Commodore Rustom Pena, the Philippine Naval Forces West commander announced today that Philippine Naval vessels are on their way to the Half Moon Shoal. The naval sources said that vessels will ascertain the overall situation in the area and will conduct an enquiry over the latest developments. Currently Philippines is engaged in a diplomatic standoff with China over the disputed territory of Scarborough Shoal.
