U.S. President Barack Obama has reportedly offered a package deal to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu which would have the Americans supply Israel with advanced bunker-busting ordnance and refueling tanker aircraft in exchange for an Israeli promise to refrain from attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities in 2012, until after the U.S. election in November.
The report, which appeared Thursday in the daily Maariv newspaper, cites “diplomatic and Western intelligence sources” who participated in the talks between the Israeli prime minister and Obama. The reported package deal could be seen as a sign that the U.S. administration has resigned itself to an Israeli attack in Iran, and is trying to position itself accordingly.
According to the Maariv report, diplomats who sat in on the meeting between the two leaders told the paper on condition of anonymity that the U.S. president made it very clear, without explicitly saying so, that the administration would see an Israeli attack on Iran in the near future in a very negative light.
Reuters, however, quoting an unnamed Israeli official, reported Thursday that Israel asked the United States for advanced "bunker-buster" bombs and refueling planes that could improve its ability to attack Iran's underground nuclear sites.
"Such a request was made" around the time of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington this week, the official said, confirming media reports.
But the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the issue, played down as "unrealistic" reports that the United States would condition supplying the hardware on Israel promising not to attack Iran this year.
