INDIA is adding a strike force to its military phalanx along the Tibet frontier with China as well as making a major push to build hydroelectric capacity on its side of the undemarcated boundary - bargaining chips in future negotiations on water sharing.
The new strike force is meant to move into Tibet as a retaliatory counter-measure should Beijing pierce through Indian defences at any point, people with knowledge of the plans told The Straits Times.
Planned for between 35,000 and 40,000 men, it is in addition to the widely publicised Indian move to raise two new army divisions for the China border as well as station Sukhoi Su-30 squadrons close to it. India is also upgrading disused air strips in the region to be used in future emergencies.
