LONDON, Sep 24 (IranMania) - Two senior Iranian policemen have been killed and seven others seriously injured during clashes with armed "criminals" from an obscure Shiite Muslim cult, reports said Thursday.

The official news agency IRNA said the clashes in the region of Mian-Doab, not far from the city of Mahabad in the northwest, occurred Wednesday when police moved in to pull down "heretical" banners in the village of Oush-Tapeh.

According to the Iranian Internet news site Baztab, which is close to a conservative figure in the Islamic regime, the men who attacked the police were part of a religious cult called the Ali-Allahi (roughly meaning "Ali is God").

The dead were identified by IRNA as a local police chief, General Bijan Ziba-Seresht, and police logistics commander, Major Reza Abbassi. It said seven other policemn were also seriously hurt, two of them critically.

London, Sept 26 (IranMania) - Iranian police on Sunday broke up a demonstration for increased freedoms outside Tehran university apparently inspired by calls from a US-based opposition television, the student agency ISNA and witnesses reported.

"People gathered around 4.30 pm (1200 GMT) in front of Tehran university's main entrance shouting slogans and handing out flowers and sweets," the news agency said.

"These people are obviously under the influence of the Iranian opposition based abroad," added the report, in an apparent reference to anti-regime satellite television channels broadcast into Iran.

Witnesses confirmed that hundreds of people had gathered in front of the university shouting pro-freedom slogans.

The report said the gathering was broken up by police, but there was no suggestion that any violent clashes took place.

According to AFP, an AFP reporter who toured the area around the university later in the evening reported heavy traffic but no sign of any fresh gatherings.

Security forces could be seen maintaining a discreet presence around the campus, an area that has in recent years been the focal point for often violent pro-democracy and anti-regime demostrations.

Details of the protest and comments from one protestor suggested the gathering was inspired by a US-based Iranian exile and opposition television personality, Ahura Pirouz Khaleghi, who appears on the Rangharangh satellite channel.

Satellite television is banned in the Islamic republic but the restrictions are flouted by millions of home owners.

The recent crackdown on "Turkish Hizbullah" has led to turmoil among Turkey's Islamists. Rather than provoking widespread fears of increased terrorism, the unveiling of a Hizbullah threat has created a context for another confrontation between the Turkish army and Turkey's legal pro-Islamist party, Fazilet. This clash has cast a political shadow on an upcoming court ruling on the Fazilet Party's (FP's) legitimacy, with possible implications for Turkey's European Union (EU) membership bid.


What is Turkish Hizbullah? An on-going police operation over the last two weeks has resulted in the capture of several high-level members of the Turkish Hizbullah, and the death of their leader, Huseyin Velioglu. Although the operation appeared to occur out of the blue, major anti-Hizbullah operations actually date back to 1998, when seventy-nine members were arrested. Turkish Hizbullah reportedly aimed to create an independent Kurdish Islamist state in the southeast of Turkey, using mosques as sites for organization and recruitment, while maintaining safehouses throughout the country for the purposes of interrogation, executions, and burying of victims. In these houses, the bodies of victims who were buried alive after being gruesomely tortured have been found. To date, more than sixty of these bodies have been recovered, with hundreds more expected.

Eine ähnliche Militäraktion flog Israel bereits 1981 gegen den Irak: Damals wurde die im Bau befindliche Atomanlage Ossirak nahe Bagdad bombardiert.
