Das finnische Unternehmen Kelluu, im Jahr 2018 gegründet, stellt kleinere Luftschiffe her - wobei die Länge etwa 12 Meter beträgt und die Nutzlast bei ca. 5 Kilogramm liegt -, die auch unter extremen klimatischen Bedingungen operieren können. Bei Tests konnten fünf dieser recht kleinen Luftfahrzeuge ein Gebiet von ca. der Größe Belgiens überwachen. Aktuell plant das Unternehmen eine Zusammenarbeit mit Kanada - was angesichts der Ausdehnungen gerade im Norden Kanadas und in der Arktis sicherlich sinnvoll sein kann.

Kelluu brings airship technology to Canada

Finnish company Kelluu, which builds autonomous airships, has announced it is expanding into Canada. The firm is setting up at Area X.O, a defence innovation hub in Ottawa, according to a Kelluu statement on 28 July. The hub brings together industry, government, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and research institutions to “accelerate the development and adoption of next-generation capabilities”, the statement noted.

Kelluu “aims to advance Canadian Arctic autonomy with technology built and tested for cold conditions”, the statement added.

Today, the NATO Innovation Fund announced its investment in Kelluu – a deep tech company operating the world’s largest autonomous airship fleet. This marks the Fund’s first direct investment in Finland, and follows Kelluu’s successful completion of two phases of NATO’s DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) program. Keen Venture Partners, VC Gungnir Capital, and Finnish state-owned investment company Tesi also invested in the round.

With its unmanned airships, Kelluu delivers 24/7 monitoring across vast areas and intelligence gathering with drone-level detail. Uninhibited by extreme weather, GPS jamming, high operational costs and regulatory constraints, the Kelluu fleet delivers continuous coverage, data collection, and connectivity across wide and remote areas, enabling earlier threat detection and safer, more efficient operations.
