ANKA-3 UCAV Performs Its Maiden Flight
TUSAŞ'S ANKA-3 Stealth UCAV for Loyal Wingman
Turkish Aerospace ANKA-3 UCAV performed its maiden flight on December 28th. The tailless UAV is the first of its kind in Turkish aviation.
Turkish Aerospace (TUSAŞ) long waited until ANKA-3 has taken off for the first time. A photo of the unmanned system in the air is shared on social media. The UAV is escorted by a turboprop aircraft, Hürkuş.
ANKA-3 is a stealth UAV thanks to its “flying wing” and tailless structure. This design prevents it from engaging in air combat but allows it to perform operations without alarming early warning systems.
ANKA-3 was displayed on the runway for the first time in March 2023, and ground tests were started in spring. His jet engine and structure allow it to have high air platform volume. This UAV will have a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 6.5 tons and a payload capacity of 1,200 kg. There will be a total of seven weapon stations on the aircraft: one under the fuselage centre, two at the inner bay and two under the wings. A tanker version of the UAV will serve other platforms on the air. The best-known practice of ANKA-3 will be the Super Şimşek UAV, which will be located under the wings. ANKA-3 will participate in the Autonomous Wingman Concept (OKU) program as the pilot’s assistant UAV.

Achievements and Transformations in Turkish Defence 2023
TurDef reviews the noteworthy developments that have shaped the Turkish defence and aerospace industries in 2023.
By Özgür Ekşi

From political dynamics to strategic acquisitions and groundbreaking technological advancements, the Turkish Defence and Defence Industry have experienced significant developments.

Our news statistics reveal the trend - most news articles peaked in April, May, and July. The surge in April and May aligns with the general election on May 14th, indicating a correlation between defence and politics. In July, we witnessed another peak during the IDEF 23 Expo. Significantly, the momentum did not wane post-election and expo, underscoring the continued interest in Turkish Defence developments.

The year brought forth significant developments in Turkiye’s foreign relations, particularly in the defence industry. Turkiye and the United Kingdom forged stronger ties, while Finland’s admission to NATO and Sweden standing by underscored the nation’s strategic positioning. Turkiye’s pursuit of British products and contemplation of acquiring Swedish ones reflect a nuanced approach to building a diversified defence portfolio.

National Emphasis: Turkish Products at the Forefront

While Turkiye emphasises the importance of national and indigenous products, strategic decisions sometimes require interim measures. Discussions about acquiring Type-23 frigates, C-130-J Hercules aircraft from the U.K., negotiations with the U.S. for F-16s, and Eurofighter talks with the U.K. showcase the intricate strategies.

Noch eine Anmerkung zur Tayfun:

Zitat:An interesting point about the Tayfun is that it may be, optimized to hit naval vessels. Several years ago, Turkish defence officials had stated that a second iteration of the Bora was being developed. It was said that the Bora II would not only have a range in excess of 500 km, but would also be capable of striking ships. It is almost certain that “Tayfun” is the new name for the Bora II and that the name which is the Turkish translation of “typhoon” is in reference to its naval attack capabilities.

As the Tayfun has only been officially revealed today, it will continue to be shrouded in mystery for a while. Though it can be speculated that it will have mid-course maneuvering and a quasi-ballistic trajectory similar to the Bora, with a much higher terminal speed. As a strategic weapon, it is unlikely that specifications and capabilities will be fully released to the public.

ARES Shipyard Unveils ULAQ ASuW Armed USV
ARES Shipyard unveiled ULAQ’s anti-ship missile fitted ASuW configuration during the World Defence Show in Saudi Arabia.
The new configuration carries four ROKETSAN ÇAKIR cruise missiles with a range of 150+ km. This integration will be a big leap from the current eight km of UMTAS/CİRİT missiles to stand-off attack capability.

An image of ULAQ ASuW was previously spotted in 2022 during a speech by the ARES Shipyard's CEO Utku Alanç. ÇAKIR cruise missile wasn’t mentioned in this presentation. Thus, the full reveal of the design in WDS solidifies the plan to use ÇAKIR as the ULAQ family’s stand-off option.

Turkiye and Pakistan to Cooperate on Air-to-Air Missiles
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) released a statement on social media platform X with the announcement of technological cooperation on air-to-air missiles.
The technological cooperation will cover Turkiye’s GÖKDOĞAN and Pakistan’s ongoing FAAZ-2 BVRAAM projects. Pakistani GIDS’s FAAZ-2 missiles were revealed in the IDEF’23 defence exhibition held in Istanbul, Turkiye.
GÖKDOĞAN is being developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE as Turkiye’s indigenous BVRAAM alongside BOZDOĞAN missile as the short-range solution. The missiles are ready for acceptance tests as of the end of 2023.
Following GÖKDOĞAN and BOZDOĞAN, TÜBİTAK SAGE’s work on AAMs extended to ramjet-powered GÖKHAN missile’s development, expected to give a boost in range and kill probability thanks to the adjustability of ramjet engine’s thrust.

FAAZ-2.jpeg
FAAZ-2 is a family of missiles with RF and IIR-guided variants, much like the French MICA family. The layout of the missiles follows a parallel with GÖKDOĞAN and AIM-120 AMRAAM. The range for both missiles was stated as 100 km in IDEF’23, and this might be subject to change for the guided variant because of heating from high-speed airflow.
Aside from aircraft launch, GIDS also plans to use FAAZ-2 as a surface-to-air missile, seemingly similar to the proposed SLAMRAAM concept based on the Humvee 4x4 vehicle.

Bayraktar AKINCI-C UCAV Conducts Maiden Flight
AKINCI UCAV’s latest variant with two 850 hp turboprop engines, AKINCI-C, conducted its maiden flight.
AKINCI-C represents another upgrade in terms of total engine power in the AKINCI line, with the previous variant AKINCI-B having 750 hp turboprop engines and AKINCI-A having Ukrainian AI-450T 450 hp turboprop engines. The larger housing for engines is noticeable.
The increased power might be related to integrating ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar and the recent İHA-SOJ project that includes AKINCI in electronic warfare configuration. As an AESA radar, MURAD has a higher power demand than an electro-optic or SAR.
