Qatar will sign for 24 Dassault Rafale combat aircraft to fulfil its fighter procurement requirement on 4 May.

The upcoming contract, which was announced by Dassault on 30 April, will be signed in Doha during a visit by French President François Hollande. The deal follows French media reports that the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) was looking to acquire an initial batch of 36 aircraft to replace the 12 Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighters it already operates.

Zitat:The U.S. government is poised to approve two long-delayed sales of Boeing Co fighter jets to Qatar and Kuwait, and could announce the multibillion-dollar deals during President Barack Obama's visit to the Gulf this week, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Both deals have been stalled amid concerns raised by Israel that equipment sent to Gulf states could fall into the wrong hands and be used against it, and by the Obama administration's broader decision-making on military aid to the Gulf.

However, the Pentagon and the State Department both have signed off on the sale of some 36 F-15 fighter jets to Qatar and 24 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to Kuwait, both built by Boeing. The White House is expected to follow suit shortly.

The sale to Kuwait is worth about $3 billion and the one to Qatar is probably close to $4 billion, sources familiar with the matter said.

"The last hurdle now is getting approval from the National Security Council and the White House," said one of the sources.

The Pentagon had no immediate comment.

A senior Obama administration official said it was the administration's policy not to comment on potential arm sales until it has formally notified Congress of an intent to sell something.

But, the official said, the United States is committed to the security and stability of the Gulf region and defense sales "fit into the overall U.S. regional diplomatic strategy."

Expected approval of the fighter jet sales comes as the White House seeks to shore up relations with Gulf allies as they increase their military capabilities amid growing fears that Washington is drawing closer to Iran in the aftermath of the nuclear deal with that country.

Senior U.S. officials, including Navy Secretary Ray Mabus have publicly urged approval of the weapons sales, which will help maintain production of the fourth-generation Boeing fighter jets, while the newer and more advanced Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jet enters service in coming years.

One senior U.S. defense official said the Pentagon is keen to see the Boeing F-15 and F/A-18 production lines in St. Louis continue and does not want to "foreclose any options on fourth-generation aircraft at this point."

Boeing already is spending "hundreds of millions" of dollars to buy long-lead materials such as titanium to prepare for a possible Kuwaiti order for F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and a separate U.S. Navy order for 12 jets put on the service's "unfunded priorities" list submitted to Congress.

The Navy is hoping that Congress will provide the funding to pay for the Boeing jets in fiscal 2017, although the planes were not included in its base budget request. It already has earmarked funding for more F/A-18E/F jets in fiscal 2018.

A larger concern now is the Boeing F-15 line, which is set to end in 2019 after Boeing completes work on a large order for Saudi Arabia, unless a follow-on order is approved.

Zitat:Qatar to buy $5.9 billion worth of warships from Italy

Qatar has agreed to buy seven navy ships from Italy at a cost of nearly $6 billion, officials have announced.

The purchase will significantly bolster the country’s maritime forces, and has been in the works for at least a year. The agreement was finalized during yesterday’s visit to Qatar by Italy’s foreign minister. [...] Qatari officials did not name the companies involved in the new agreement.

But in June 2016, Italy’s state-backed shipbuilder Fincantieri said it had signed a multi-billion dollar deal to build ships for Qatar. In terms of financial and military heft, this is one of the biggest agreements Qatar has signed in years to boost its naval defense. [...]

Fincantieri says its corvettes are typically 104m long and are operated by a crew of some 105 individuals, although various models have different specifications.

First Qatari Patriot deployed at base

A Patriot fire unit has been deployed for the first time at one of the sites being constructed for the air defence system in Qatar, Maxar satellite imagery shows.

Located to the immediate southwest of Al-Udeid Air Base, the site has been under construction since early 2018. The AN/MPQ-65 radar and four launchers appeared on their pads between 19-21 October, the satellite imagery shows. Four other Qatari Patriot sites have been identified by Jane's . One is about 15 km north of Al-Udeid, putting it in a better position to defend Doha from Iranian ballistic missiles. This base appears to include the headquarters building and command bunker for the new Qatari Emiri Air Defence Forces (QEADF). [...] The other sites protect the gas industry at Ras Laffan, the port of Mesaieed south of Doha, and the Al-Shamal Camp army base in the north of the emirate.

Dazu vermutlich zwei AW101-Hubschrauber.
Zitat:Fincantieri Lays Keel Of Qatar’s Air Defense LPD

The keel laying of the amphibious vessel (LPD – Landing Platform Dock) ordered to Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence within the national naval acquisition program, took place at the Palermo shipyard. [...]

The LPD is designed consistent with the RINAMIL (rules for naval ships classification) rules to ensure extremely efficient land-air-marine connections. It will be highly flexible and capable of fulfilling different kinds of tasks, from humanitarian interventions to support the Armed Forces and land operations.

The ship will be about 143 meters long, 21.5 meters wide and it will be able to accommodate about 550 persons on board, equipped with two vehicle ramps and an internal floodable dock, capable of accommodating a ready-to-go LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized) that can also be stored on garage deck, and can be deployed using a system of davits. Furthermore, the flight deck is sized for hosting NH90 helicopter. [...] The LPD will be fitted with a Kronos multifunction radar (similar to the one fitted on the corvettes) as well as a new L-Band radar by Leonardo known as Kronos Power Shield. Naval News understands this radar was too large to be fitted on the corvette, this is why this solution (corvette + LPD) was proposed to fit the unique requirement of the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces. [...]

Another unique feature of this LPD is the fact it is fitted with two 8-cell VLS Sylver A50 for medium-range surface-to-air missile system which MBDA has indicated as the Aster 30 Block 1 munitions as part of the SAAM-ESD air-defence system. Although Fincantieri hasn’t released information or commented the AAW capabilities of the LPD, the combination of the MBDA SAAM-ESD with Aster 30 Block 1 missile system, the Leonardo Kronos AESA multifunction radar and the early-detection information from the Kronos Power Shield. [...] The ships will be fitted with the Sylena MK2 decoy launching systems by Lacroix.
