Ethiopia: Kenya's Exports to Ethiopia Up 68 Pc On Increased Food Consignments

Nairobi — Exports to Ethiopia more than doubled rising by 68 percent in the third quarter of 2021 compared to a similar period in 2020, data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has said.

The increment from Shs 1927 billion to Shs 5963 billion was attributed to the rise to increased food exports to the East African country which has been hit by a political crisis over war between government forces and the rebel Tigray People's Liberation Army (TPLF) in the north of the country. [...] "This growth partly resulted from increase in the value of domestic exports of food preparations for infants to Ethiopia and electric generating sets and converters to Tanzania," the report noted. [...] The growth was largely on account of increase in domestic exports of horticulture, articles of apparel and clothing accessories, edible products and preparations, and titanium ores and concentrates.

Das ist durchaus interessant: Obgleich aufgrund des Bürgerkrieges in Äthiopien dort die Wirtschaft schwer leidet (und das BIP von rund 98 Mrd. US-Dollar 2018 auf derzeit geschätzt 92 Mrd. US-Dollar zurückging), und man zudem den Krieg gegen die TPLF noch finanzieren muss, importiert Äthiopien deutlich mehr Güter vom Nachbarn Kenia. Die hier genannten Werte sollen nicht erschrecken (der Shs ist der Uganda-Schilling, er wird etwa mit grob 4.000 Shs je einem Euro verrechnet), aber es haben sich dennoch die Importe, vorzugsweise von Nahrungsmitteln, innerhalb von nur einem Jahr verdreifacht.

Kann mehreres bedeuten:

1.) Die eigene Produktion ist eingebrochen aufgrund des Bürgerkrieges, deswegen die Importe, um generell die Versorgung des Kernlandes sicherzustellen.
2.) Man baut ein versorgungstechnisches Back-Up auf, um die TPLF mit einer Hungerkampagne dann "austrocknen" und um das Leiden der eigenen Anhängerschaft reduzieren zu können.
