Zitat:BAE Systems Begin Cooperation with Kaman on Maritime Helicopter Package
(Source: BAE Systems; issues Sept. 14, 2004)
BAE Systems Avionics Group and Kaman Aerospace Corporation have begun cooperation to provide a low-cost, high-capability intermediate maritime helicopter package based on Kaman's SH-2G Super Seasprite and BAE Systems' mission system and sensor suite.
Initial efforts will be focussed on NATO interoperable communications and navigation systems, autonomous self-protection suites, sensor and target acquisition packages that will enhance situational awareness, as well as a range of anti-submarine and anti-surface weapons. The resulting aircraft will provide the worldwide Naval Aviation community with the ideal combination of proven systems and proven aircraft.
Jim Field, BAE Systems' Head of Campaign Battlefield Systems, said, "The cooperation between BAE Systems Avionics Group and Kaman Aerospace Corporation provides an excellent opportunity for us both to provide a proven maritime platform with tested avionics systems."
BAE Systems has major operations across five continents and customers in some 130 countries. The company has 100,000 people and generates annual sales of approximately £12 billion through its wholly-owned and joint venture operations.
BAE Systems Avionics is one of Europe's leading avionics companies, and the UK's foremost supplier of electronic systems for military platforms in the air, at sea and on land. With its head office at Basildon in the UK, the Avionics organisation has major sites in southern England and Scotland. The Group employs 4,900 people.

Zitat:Cobham to cut 140 jobs
Cobham, a leading supplier of parts to the Apache helicopter, says that a delay in the delivery of the second tranche of 236 Eurofighters, caused by the Government's technical demands, contributed to its plans to cut 140 staff in its fuel systems division.
Allan Cook, chief executive, said the delay was partly to blame, but added that the defence and aerospace group needed to address its cost base.
Cobham reported a record first half order intake of £528m and posted an 11pc rise in pre-tax profits to £51.8m for the half on revenue 20pc higher at £478m. The shares slipped 74p to £13.78.

Zitat:BAE plans to merge UK naval shipbuilders
By Sylvia Pfeifer and Robert Peston (Filed: 26/09/2004)
BAE Systems, Britain's largest defence contractor, has reached outline agreement with the Government on a proposal to merge the country's naval shipyards.
Under the proposal BAE would merge its three shipyards - Govan and Scotstoun on the Clyde, and Barrow-in-Furness - with yards owned by VT Group, Babcock and Swan Hunter at Portsmouth, Rosyth and Wallsend respectively.
Govan is one of shipyards that may be merged
BAE's yards alone employ some 5,300 workers and, if combined, the six yards would employ about 10,000 - comprising almost all of Britain's warship building capability. BAE would probably end up with some 50 per cent of the merged entity.
"The Government is signed up for it," said an executive close to the negotiations. "It's the best way of retaining a proper shipbuilding capacity in the UK."
The Ministry of Defence is developing a national shipbuilding strategy for Britain. The industry is keen to smooth out the traditional peaks and troughs in procurement and executives have warned that the current glut of large defence programmes could be followed by a famine.
Instead, they want to spread the work from major programmes - notably the Type 45 frigates, the £4bn aircraft-carrier project and the Military Afloat Reach & Sustainability project for "logistics" ships - over the next two decades.
The programmes would be allocated to the yards in a merged company on a planned basis, without the cut-throat competition that has characterised recent orders.
The strategy will be discussed by the shipbuilders and government officials on October 11. One executive said: "There are a number of options being considered - collaboration of all the yards, joint ventures or one incorporated joint venture led by a separate management company.
"But we have to get the Government to agree that programmes will be allocated and not competitively tendered. That is fundamental to any deal and we will then decide how to structure it."
Last night industry analysts warned that a full merger could be stymied if BAE insisted on holding 50 per cent of the enlarged entity.
Gordon Campbell, the chairman of Babcock, said: "I think the concept of the four shipyards working together in a consortium with a stable programme would be advantageous to everyone. We would be open-minded to the concept of a merger but it would be very difficult to agree valuations."
Paul Lester, the chief executive of VT, said: "We are very supportive of a collaborative approach to the industry that recognises the needs of the long term for the customer as well as the skill-base for the industry."
BAE's proposal comes after Mike Turner, the chief executive, signalled earlier this month that it was unlikely to proceed with the sale of its shipyards pending the outcome of the discussions.
BAE said in April it was seeking offers for its yards as it was unable to make a profit from them under the Government's current procurement policy. The yards are not expected to move into profit until 2008 despite having an annual turnover of up to £750m.

Westland makes Apache and Lynx helicopters
The government has given the go-ahead for the £1.06bn sale of Yeovil-based helicopter maker AgustaWestland.
GKN's disposal of its 50% stake in Agusta to Italian partner Finmeccanica is not to be investigated by the Competition Commission, it was decided.
The deal signals the end of British ownership in the helicopter industry.
But the government says Agusta's production of military helicopters for the UK must remain under the control of a UK-registered company.
In the absence of any UK bidders, there was nothing we could do
Arthur Taylor
Amicus
This means Finmeccanica would have to have government approval before selling off or winding up the defence-related assets of AgustaWestland.
Arthur Taylor, regional secretary of the union Amicus for the South West, told BBC News Online: "We are in talks with Westland and Finemeccanica to secure as many jobs as possible and make sure the site has a future.
"There was no point in opposing this: it has been on the cards for a long time and in the absence of any UK bidders, there was nothing we could do."
"We are waiting for orders from the government now.
"We need the Future Lynx [helicopter] contract as the site is in danger without it and we have been putting pressure on Geoff Hoon about this."
Heseltine row
GKN says the sale will allow it to concentrate on its car components business, and other aerospace activities.
Before Westland merged with Agusta in 2000, the company was at the centre of a political storm.
The Westland affair in the mid-1980s led to the resignation of former Defence Secretary Michael Heseltine.
Mr Heseltine quit Margaret Thatcher's Cabinet following a row over a rescue package for the company which was suffering from serious financial problems.
The company survived and Westland and Agusta joined together, creating a business with an order book totalling £5.33bn.
The factory in Yeovil employs more than 4,000 people.

Zitat:MINISTRY OF DEFENCE News Release (141/2004) issued by the Government News Network on 12 October 2004
Britain’s troops will get thousands of state-of-the-art new vehicles as part of the biggest military truck procurement for 25 years, Defence Procurement Minister Lord Bach announced today.
Vehicle manufacturer MAN ERF is in line for the £1.1 billion contract to build and support a fleet of military trucks and recovery vehicles, creating and supporting hundreds of jobs across the UK.
The deal with MAN ERF, who have been chosen as Preferred Bidder for the contract, means Britain’s Armed Forces will get an advanced truck and recovery vehicle fleet which will be assembled at sites across the UK.
The project, which is consistent with the Government’s Defence Industrial Policy, will provide our Armed Forces with over 5,000 modern, versatile and robust support vehicles from 2007, with an option to buy thousands more under consideration. The vehicles will be capable of transporting large quantities of bulk equipment to our front-line troops wherever they are operating in the world.
Lord Bach, Minister for Defence Procurement said: “I am delighted to announce the selection of MAN ERF as preferred bidder for this important contract. It will give our Forces one of the most advanced support vehicle fleets in the world, creating hundreds of jobs across the country while ensuring the British taxpayer gets the best possible value for money. It is good news for our Armed Forces and good news for the UK. ”
“These trucks are the workhorses of our ground troops and they will bring our front line forces a much improved capability for transporting vital supplies while on deployed operations. They are far more capable than their predecessors and will have improved cross country capabilities and the ability to be fitted with blast proof armour. ”
The new fleet will consist of a mix of cargo and recovery vehicles. They will replace the MOD’s tri-service fleet of four, eight and 14 tonne cargo vehicles and recovery trucks.

Zitat:VT Unveils Latest OPV Offering
(Source: VT Shipbuilding; issued Oct. 6, 2004)
The latest development from the VT Shipbuilding family of offshore patrol vessels (OPV) will be formally unveiled at the Defendory 2004 Exhibition in Greece.
The 96m, multi-purpose OPV is a highly capable and versatile design able to undertake various roles throughout Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). Among tasks well suited to this ship are protection of territorial waters, extended surveillance patrols, deterrent operations, clandestine operations, search and rescue, maritime disaster relief and helicopter operations.
It has good self-defence capability against both surface and air threats and incorporates high levels of redundancy and survivability.
Peter Stirk, VT Shipbuilding Director of Export Sales, said: “The MOPV has a worldwide market and is fully equipped to carry out the full range of EEZ duties while providing crew with high levels of habitability and operational comfort.
“One of the major attributes to the design is flexibility with the platform providing the basis for varying levels of capability tailored to the requirements of the customer. It enables us to offer the latest in OPV technology at a budget affordable to most bluewater navies.”
Particular consideration has been given to both helicopter and small boat operations. The flight deck and hangar have been designed to suit a medium-sized helicopter providing a comprehensive organic capability. The flight deck is also capable of carrying a 12-tonne helicopter.
Main propulsion will be provided by a four engine CODAD arrangement giving speeds of at least 25 knots. High level of redundancy and reliability, with ease of maintenance, are additional features of the propulsion unit. Indeed, ease of maintenance is a feature throughout the ship.
The latest stealth features have been included in the design with defensive capability offered by surveillance radar, ESM and data link. The ship has the deterrent capability to engage surface targets from fast patrol boat size and upwards by utilising weapons including medium calibre guns from 76-30mm, SSM systems and Shorads, supported by a comprehensive weapons management system.
A key element of the design is a high standard of crew accommodation and the MOPV includes an active fin stabilisation system to provide reduced motions, thus enhancing the effectiveness of both the crew and ship systems. In addition, it incorporates a “RAM” bow which delivers improved fuel economy and further enhances seakeeping performance.

Zitat:New Super Vita
NEW SUPER VITA BUILDS ON PROVEN DESIGN
VT Shipbuilding has built on the success of its Super Vita Class with the launch of a stretched version of the 62m. fast attack craft, which is currently in production for the Hellenic Navy.
The 69m. version of the Super Vita incorporates several enhanced features that will address the requirements of navies around the world seeking a highly capable patrol craft that will serve as an effective vessel for Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) duties.
VT has built upon its long experience of building attack and patrol craft to create this third generation of the Vita Class, following the initial 56 metre version built for Qatar and the 62m., five of which are currently under build by Elefsis Shipbuilding, in partnership with VT, for the Hellenic Navy.
Peter Stirk, VT Shipbuilding’s Director of Export Sales, explained: “VT has traditionally been at the forefront of attack craft and patrol craft design and the demand for these ships means that designs are evolving rapidly. The Super Vita Mark II represents the cutting edge of class design, incorporating the latest features and technology.”
The latest Super Vita is versatile enough to be used for naval gunfire support, anti-aircraft combat, anti-surface combat, mine avoidance and high speed interception. It is faster than its predecessor despite having the same propulsion units, with speeds of 36 knots achievable. This is some 1.5 knots faster than the current ship.
Considerable improvements have also been made to the stealth capability to take advantage of the latest technology, including utilising a reshaped coupla or dome for the medium calibre gun positioned forward.
Screening bulkheads are also fitted while an IRST infra red searching system has been added to enhance overall detection capability. Improved defensive systems include a laser warning system and mine avoidance sonar.
Additional frames have been placed throughout the ship to enable enhancements. In the midships area, this provides the scope for extra flexibility in accommodation by increasing crew numbers up to 53 berths with en-suite elements allowing for mixed crewing. Other areas that benefit from increased space include the bridge, CIC, engine room and wardroom.
The Super Vita is already one of the most heavily armed ships available in relation to
her size with 76mm gun, surface to air and close-in-weapon system. The additional space also allows for a heavyweight torpedo option to be considered.
“The latest generation of this successful Class takes the best of the existing design features and adds the elements that have resulted from comments made by existing and potential customers,” adds Mr Stirk.

Zitat:Armoured Infantry Gets Latest Anti-Tank Missile
(Source: UK Ministry of Defence; issued Oct. 14, 2004)
The Ministry of Defence has announced an additional purchase of Javelin - the shoulder launched anti-tank guided weapon - with a value of around £100M.
Already in production for 16 Air Assault Brigade, 3 Commando Brigade and the Mechanised Infantry, Javelin has now also been selected to equip British Army Armoured Infantry (AI) and Formation Reconnaissance (FR) forces.
Javelin is the most advanced medium-range anti-tank missile system in the world. Each system is light enough to be easily carried by two men and can be set up, locked onto its target and fired in moments.
Once launched the weapon uses sensitive electronic guidance systems to guide itself towards its target, allowing the user time to reload or move position. Javelin also offers a variety of different attack modes - in top attack it will climb to more than one hundred feet above the target, coming straight down on top of it for maximum effect.
Minister for Defence Procurement, Lord Bach said: "Javelin is already in service with the US Army and has proved its worth in recent operations in Iraq. It can be moved quickly around the battlefield but also has enough power to take out the most heavily protected tanks and armoured vehicles.
"We agreed a contract to provide the weapon to 16 Air Assault Brigade, 3 Commando Brigade and the Mechanised Infantry last year and have now agreed an additional purchase for other infantry and reconnaissance units, ensuring they are equipped with the very best weaponry available.
"It took less than a year to go from formulating the requirement to signing the contract - a contract which promises to deliver an exceptional combination of capability and value-for-money. This is a prime example of the benefits that SMART acquisition can bring.
I am delighted the purchase will help to sustain some 200 jobs around the UK."
The Javelin system is expected to be with 16 Air Assault Brigade and 3 Commando Brigade from 2005 and the Mechanised Infantry Armoured Infantry and Formation Reconnaissance from 2007.
BACKGROUND NOTES:
1. Javelin will be provided by a joint venture between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.
2. Javelin will replace the Milan and Swingfire anti-tank missiles, which have been in service for more than 20 years.
3. Javelin is being procured by the Infantry Guided Weapons Integrated Project Team at the Defence Procurement Agency, Bristol. (ends)
Zitat:UK Increases Order for Raytheon-Lockheed Javelin for Light Forces Anti-Tank Guided Weapon system
(Source: Raytheon Company, Lockheed Martin; issued Oct. 14, 2004)
TUCSON, Ariz. --- The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence has placed a follow-on order, valued at approximately $180 million, for the Raytheon-Lockheed Martin Javelin weapon system. This purchase of Javelin will provide a medium-range anti-tank missile for the British Army’s Armored Ground Component (AGC) requirement.
The selection of Javelin for AGC follows a competitive win by the Javelin Joint Venture and its U.K. partners for the U.K. Light Forces Anti-tank Guided Weapon program in 2003.
This follow-on order increases the number of rounds and command launch units that will be procured through a hybrid foreign military sale/ direct commercial sale.
Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Bach said: “Javelin is already in service with the U.S. Army and has proved its worth in recent operations in Iraq. It is manoeuvrable enough to move quickly around the battlefield but also has enough power to take out the most heavily protected tanks and armoured vehicles.”
“We agreed a contract to provide the weapon to 16 Air Assault Brigade, 3 Commando Brigade and the Mechanised Infantry last year and have now agreed an additional purchase for other infantry and reconnaissance units, ensuring they are equipped with the very best weaponry available.”
“It took less than a year to go from formulating the requirement to signing the contract -- a contract which promises to deliver an exceptional combination of capability and value-for-money. This is a prime example of the benefits that SMART acquisition can bring.”
“I am delighted the purchase will help to sustain some 200 jobs around the U.K.,” concluded Lord Bach.
“Continued Javelin procurement will provide the U.K. forces with one of the most precise and lethal weapons on the battlefield for many years in the future,” said Col. Lloyd E. McDaniels, the U.S. Army’s project manager at U.S. Army Close Combat Weapon Systems. “Also, the Javelin’s integrated day and thermal night sights provide the soldier with the ability to perform surveillance missions and increases situational awareness to the commander and Javelin gunners and ensures both operational and logistic interoperability with U.S. Army, Marine and Special Operation Forces.”
With this award, Javelin becomes the U.K.’s premier anti-armor/assault weapon and will be fielded with light rapid reaction forces, mechanized forces and now the armored forces. Javelin will provide the latest man-portable, anti-tank weapon capability that can be used day or night. With a range of up to 2,500 metres, using long-wave imaging infrared technology, it will allow for deployment by a single soldier and can be fired from within a confined space. The Light Forces component of the Javelin program will enter service in 2005. The AGC Javelin program will enter service in 2007.
Javelin is in service with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and has been used extensively on operations including Operation Iraqi Freedom. Along with the U.K. selection of Javelin, other commonwealth nations that have already procured Javelin include Australia and New Zealand. Javelin is also on order for the armed forces of several other countries and is being evaluated for integration onto ground and naval platforms.
“Javelin and our U.K. team members are very pleased that the U.K. has put its trust in us to deliver such an important capability to the British Army and Royal Marines,” said Michael Crisp, Javelin Joint Venture president. “The Javelin system is the world’s only combat-proven medium range fire-and-forget anti-armor system. I look forward to continuing our relationship with world- class U.K. teammates to bring a combat proven, highly effective, low risk, value for money solution to the British armed forces.”
“Lockheed Martin chose BAE Systems Basildon to continue to produce the Javelin seeker, a high-technology item,” said Howard Weaver, Javelin Joint Venture vice president. “BAEs’ excellent performance was a key factor in winning this follow-on contract. This lays the foundation for continuing trans-Atlantic cooperation.”
The Javelin JV is working on a number of technology spirals with both the U.S. and U.K. in support of future requirements including extended range. Future applications such as U.S. Future Combat Systems and the U.K. Future Rapid Effects Systems-Guided Weapon are considered potential future technology insertions.
The Raytheon-Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture has a large U.K. partnership base and this procurement will further enhance their position within the wider Javelin community. Currently 15 companies throughout the country are supplying components up to sub-assembly level for the Javelin program.

Forgeard will Führung übernehmen

Zitat:Ultra torpedo defence wins $18m US deal
Ultra Electronics, which supplies electronic products to the defence industry, has announced two substantial new contracts, one with the US navy and one with Rolls-Royce.
Ultra is to supply US Navy ships with a torpedo defence system in a deal worth $18m over two years. It has also finally signed a £23m, five-year contract to supply instrumentation to Royal Navy submarines Rolls-Royce is making.
City analysts said the contract to supply the US navy underlined the group's expertise. Investment bank UBS, in a note to clients, said: "Considering there are over 300 vessels in the US navy, we think this breakthrough contract has great promise for the medium term." Ultra has already generated nearly £60m of turnover from supplying 60 far smaller Navy vessels.
Ultra's chief operating officer Douglas Caster said that the anti-torpedo devices had never been used in combat.
The group said it is on track to post a strong second-half performance, despite the weak dollar likely to knock 3.5 percentage points off its sales growth.
The shares ended up 18 to 685p.
