Turkiye Sees Patriot Move as Step to Ease Aegean Tensions TurDef
Turkiye has described Greece’s removal of a Patriot air defence battery from Karpathos and its relocation to Crete as a positive step, giving the military redeployment broader diplomatic significance in the Aegean.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defence said on Thursday that Ankara viewed the decision as a move in the direction of reversing what it considers an improper practice concerning the militarisation of islands under demilitarised status.
“The legal status of the islands under demilitarised status is clearly governed by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty. We have consistently stated that Greece’s militarisation of these islands in violation of the treaties is unlawful and that this practice should be discontinued,” the ministry said.
“In this context, we regard the decision to relocate the Patriot air defence systems from Karpathos Island to Crete as a positive step towards reversing the existing improper practice.”
The ministry added that Turkiye would continue to support constructive steps that contribute to strengthening peace and stability in the region and are consistent with international law and obligations arising from treaties.
Greece began moving the Patriot battery from Karpathos to Souda on Crete on August 23. Greek state broadcaster ERT said the relocation was intended to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure at Souda amid heightened concerns over potential Iranian threats and a broader rearrangement of air defence forces in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Souda Bay is a major US and NATO military hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. It hosts US Naval Support Activity Souda Bay and the NATO Marathi Pier Complex, while also serving as an important logistics and support hub for US Sixth Fleet forces operating in the region.
The operational rationale behind the relocation therefore appears to be primarily related to developments beyond the Aegean rather than to Greek-Turkish relations. Ankara’s response, however, places the move in a different diplomatic context, interpreting the withdrawal of the system from Karpathos as a constructive development.
The Patriot battery had been deployed to Karpathos in March as Greece reinforced its air defences amid the deteriorating regional security environment involving Iran.
For Karpathos specifically, the relevant demilitarisation provision is contained in the 1947 Treaty of Peace with Italy. Article 14 transferred the Dodecanese Islands from Italy to Greece and lists Karpathos under its former Italian name, Scarpanto. The same article stipulates that the islands shall remain demilitarised.
Athens disputes Ankara’s interpretation of the legal regime governing the islands. Greece acknowledges that the 1947 treaty contains a demilitarisation provision for the Dodecanese but maintains that Turkiye, as a non-party to the treaty, cannot invoke its provisions. Athens also argues that its defensive posture is supported by its inherent right of self-defence.
The relocation does not resolve that longstanding disagreement or indicate a broader change in Greek policy towards the military status of the Dodecanese. It nevertheless removes one specific point of friction: a major air defence system to which Ankara had objected has been withdrawn from Karpathos.
The significance of the Turkish statement therefore lies less in the operational movement of a single Patriot battery than in the way Ankara has chosen to frame it. By describing the transfer as a “positive step” and linking its position to peace and stability, the ministry has left room for the relocation to be viewed as a limited step that could help reduce military friction in the Aegean.

Türkiye has opened TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan 2026 at Golcuk Naval Shipyard Command, using the four-day event to showcase the ships, autonomous systems and engineering programs behind its “Blue Homeland” maritime strategy.
Running from August 20 to 23, the festival brings together 37 Turkish naval elements and platforms, including TCG Anadolu, TCG Istanbul, TCG Derya, frigates, corvettes and submarines, alongside unmanned surface and underwater systems.
