Iran plans to put a new missile frigate into service for its navy.
Officials said the navy would launch the missile frigate, identified as the Sina-1, in March 2003.
Naval commander Rear Adm. Abbas Mohtaj said the frigate would be launched as part of the service's armament program. In a meeting with senior officers, Mohtaj said the navy plans to achieve self-sufficiency.
The commander said the navy would also introduce a destroyer into service. He said the Mowj warship was being constructed and completed after the Sina-1.
The navy has introduced new platforms and systems in an effort to boost its presence in the Straits of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. Naval commanders said they would not tolerate any intrusion in Iranian territorial waters.
Mohtaj said Iranian naval forces used sonar to detect an unidentified foreign submarine in the Caspian Sea last month. The commander said Iranian naval forces chased the submarine out of Iran's territorial waters. Iran and other Caspian Sea countries are engaged in a dispute over dividing the body of water.
On Dec. 18, Iran announced an increase in military spending. The announcement came during the presentation of the $107 billion fiscal budget for 2003 by President Mohammad Khatami to parliament.
"Upgrading military capability and deterrence ... expanding and reinforcing military industries to achieve new technologies, have been given priority in the draft budget," Khatami said. "
