The Israeli aid delegation to Haiti began operating its emergency field hospital in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince Saturday evening.
The hospital includes an intensive care room, delivery rooms and wards for children and the elderly. Many injured people were reportedly being treated at the hospital and more were on their way.
Brig.-Gen. Shalom Ben-Arye, who heads the Israeli delegation, said Saturday afternoon that it was still possible to find survivors among the ruins of the capital. He was quoted by Israel Radio as saying that three search-and-rescue teams would leave at first light to search for survivors in several spots around the city, among them the collapsed UN headquarters.
An Israeli aid delegation landed in Port-au-Prince on Friday night. Around 220 soldiers and officers are in the delegation, including 120 medical personnel that will operate an emergency field hospital. An IDF plane loaded with equipment landed shortly after the staff.
