Mal einen älteren Strang reaktivieren: Sambia, das noch vor Jahren als ein Land im Aufstieg begriffen worden war - wobei man anmerken muss, dass es eines der Armenhäuser Afrikas ist -, steht am Rande des Zusammenbruchs. Schuld daran sind nicht schwerpunktmäßig der Krieg in der Ukraine oder Corona, sondern vor allem hausgemachte Probleme: Korruption, Inflation, Machtmissbrauch der Eliten, eine desolate Infrastruktur (sofern sie den Namen verdient), Gängelung von Journalisten und Oppositionellen, Mangelernährung, Ausverkauf der Ressourcen des Landes (v. a. Kupfer) an ausländische Investoren...

Earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $1.3bn loan to the country, which defaulted on its $17.3bn of external debt after a collapse in its public finances during the pandemic. [...] Of Zambia’s external debt, 46% is owed to private lenders, 22% to China, 8% to other governments and 18% to multilateral institutions. China is among the government lenders to agree a longer debt repayment schedule that private lenders, including banks, have so far resisted, Debt Justice said. [...]

The Zambian Civil Society Debt Alliance, Global Justice Now, Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA), Christian Aid, Cafod and Jubilee Scotland are also campaigning for BlackRock and other private lenders to cancel the debt.
