Möglich, dass die demonstrative Einigkeit, die Trump und Japans Premier Shinzō Abe bislang an den Tag gelegt haben, durchschlägt auf die Politik beider Länder gegenüber China (Trump hatte ja öfters schon seinen Zorn gegenüber China und bez. der Handelspolitik des Reiches der Mitte geäußert und zudem Japan seine uneingeschränkte Unterstützung zugesagt) und auch erste konkrete Reaktionen nach sich zieht, besonders auch was die Insel-Streitereien im ostchinesischen Meer angeht...

Japan plans to accelerate a warship building program to make two frigates a year to patrol the fringes of the East China Sea, where it disputes island ownership with China, three people with knowledge of the plan said.

Japan previously was building one 5,000-ton class destroyer a year, but will now make two 3,000-ton class ships a year, beginning from the April 2018 fiscal year, the people said, declining to be identified as they are not authorized to talk to the media. Japan and China dispute ownership of a group of islands in the East China Sea, about 220 km (140 miles) northeast of Taiwan. In Japan, they are known as the Senkakus, while China calls them the Diaoyu islands.

Des weiteren hat nicht nur Japan für sich selbst angekündigt, sich stärker zu engagieren ob der teils recht offenkundig-dreisten chinesischen Expansionsbestrebungen, sondern haben nun auch die USA reagiert und wieder - nach einiger Zeit der Zurückhaltung unter Obama - einen Träger zumindest in Richtung der umstrittenen Gebiete geschickt...

U.S. Navy deploys aircraft carrier to South China Sea

he U.S. Navy said it has deployed its USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier to conduct training operations in the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer is joining the 97,000-ton USS Carl Vinson along with aircraft from Carrier Air Wing for the "routine operations" that began Saturday, the U.S. Navy said. [...]

In recent years, while the U.S. Navy suspended operations in the South China Sea as part of former President Barack Obama's policy of caution and avoidance of extra confrontation with Beijing, China began to aggressively build in the Spratly Islands, installing military-grade runways and deploying surface-to-air weaponry, according to satellite images.
