Egyptian politicians have lashed out at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, one going so far as to say Egypt should cultivate close ties with Iran.

Abdel Salam Moussa said that he favors a Cairo (Egypt), Ankara (Turkey) and Tehran (Iran) alliance that could pressure Israel on major issues such as Palestinian statehood.

He made his statements during a meeting of the Shura Council's (the upper house of the Egyptian Parliament) Arab Affairs Committee.

Al Masry Al Youm recently ran an editorial on the subject, in which Hassan Nafaa characterized the regional conflict as "an existential conflict against a Zionist project that aims to crush the spirit of the Arab people as a whole." He observed that "Egypt's exit from the Arab-Israeli conflict more than thirty years ago did not help it become an advanced state, and the [Syria's continued involvement] in the conflict did not lead to its [Syria's ] collapse or surrender." Nafa concluded "that the Arab world will not reclaim its soul before Egypt reclaims its own."
