India plays “games” with Chinese offer

23 April 2005: India is unlikely to accept Chinese proposals made during Wen Jiabao’s visit to invest in the commercial projects of ISRO and upgrade Russian military equipment such as T-72 battle tanks, 105mm guns, automatic grenade launchers, and BMPs.

Officials said that Russia was enraged to hear the Chinese offer to upgrade its equipment, it advertising its capability to modernise upto seventy-two Russian ordnance items, but India has explained it did not seek Chinese participation, although for reasons of getting competitive prices from Russia, it could play at being double-minded about the Chinese proposal.

“The Russians knocked off forty per cent on the RPG upgradation cost after we told them about the Chinese offer,” said an official, “and we plan to use this threat again.”
