die Sunday Times brachte am 11. Juni einen Bericht über den Absturz mit folgender Aussage:

The first clues were given by two Chinese-controlled newspapers in Hong Kong, Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Po. On Monday they printed articles disclosing that the plane was a Chinese version of the formidable Airborne Warning and Control System (Awacs) aircraft flown by the United States to manage air, sea and land battles.

They indicated that it was a Russian Ilyushin four-engined cargo jet, rebuilt to house a conspicuous array of radars and codenamed KJ-2000. The doomed flight, they implied, had been a test mission.

The disaster robbed China of 35 of its best electronic warfare technicians, according to sources in Hong Kong. There were also five crew members on board.

Takungpao News ist nun die Zeitung, die die Varjag schon seit Monaten immer wieder als Flugzeugträger der PLAN im Einsatz sieht, und alleine ein oder zwei Zeitungsberichte "aus xter Hand" sind für mich nicht sicher genug; letztendlich schien alles auf die beiden Berichte aus HK und daraus resultierenden Schlußfolgerungen und wild wuchernden Spekulationen zurück zu führen sein, wobei wohl beide Zeitungen dieselbe Quelle hatten (wenn nicht voneinander abgeschrieben wurde) und in diversen Foren wird heftig spekuliert:

Deshalb hab ich auch nach weiteren Quellen gefragt, denn eine unabhängige Bestätigung durch andere Medien, ein Interview mit einem Militär oder Politiker, Bilder von der Absturzstelle usw. würde dem Bericht doch mehr Substanz geben.

Shaanxi AEW Aircraft Crashed During Test

A military plane that crashed killing all 40 people onboard was an advanced KJ-200 airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft undergoing flight test, it emerged.

Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday 4 June that a military plane carrying 40 people was lost in the eastern province of Anhui and no survivor was found. Chinese president Hu Jintao has expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives and ordered a full investigation into the cause of the accident.

The KJ-200 AEW plane is based on Shaanxi’s Y-8F-600 turboprop transport aircraft with an linear-shape electronically steered phased-array (ESA) radar antenna mounted on top of its fuselage. At least two prototypes are believed to have been built. The plane involved in the 4 June accident was reported to be the No.2 prototype, which was carrying out a flight test mission at the time.

aber wie das so ist in China - nix genaues weiss man nicht (ist eh erstaunlich, was alles an angebichen Fakten schon rausgekommen ist)

Confusion: Was it a KJ-2000 AWACS or a Y-8 Balance Beam AWACS that crashed?
