The AN/FPS-108 Cobra Dane Radar System collects and disseminates exoatmospheric, multiple-object intelligence data.

The Cobra Dane collects exoatmospheric, multiple-object intelligence data on Russian reentry vehicles and can extract and reduce the data on site. The system also provides early warning and attack assessment for missiles that would impact the continental United States, and detects and catalogs satellites for the U.S. Air Force’s Spacetrack systems.
A modernization effort has extended the Cobra Dane’s operational life by 15 years and enhanced its performance to meet upgraded mission requirements. The upgrade features new hardware, including the signal and data processing system, receivers, and displays, and a transition to Ada software.

Cobra-Dane wurde seit 1970 entwickelt und ist seit 1977 in Betrieb, es wurde 1990 modernisiert, seit damals sind die USA in der Lage ICBM's und ihre RV zu orten, solange sie über die Nordhalbkugel der Erde auf die USA/Kanada zufliegen.
Als Ergänzung zu diesem System wird dieses entwickelt:

The shipboard AN/SPQ-11 Cobra Judy is an integrated, computer-driven surveillance radar system that supports U.S. missile and space research and development activities. It monitors and collects exoatmospheric and endoatmospheric data on foreign ballistic missile tests, complementing the Cobra Dane Radar System, which gathers exoatmospheric data.

The Cobra Judy’s data collection system is comprised of two radars — an S-band, computer-driven, phased array radar and an X-band dish radar. The Cobra Judy is installed on a dedicated shipboard platform, the U.S.N.S. Observation Island.

Dieses Radar würde dann in Südostasien auf See sein, um ICBM's in der Startphase mittels Radar, sobald sie weit genug über dem Horizont sind zu orten. Dieses Schiff (USNS Observation Island) ist meines Wissens nach nicht mit irgendwelchen Raketen augerüstet, sondern dient allein der Aufklärung.

An integral part of the THAAD System, the THAAD radar is an X-band, phased array, solid-state radar. It supports the long-range functional requirements of the THAAD mission by delivering high power output and exceptional beam/waveform agility

In allen Artikeln, die ich jetzt mal nachgeschlagen habe spielt Infrarotortung nur eine untergeordnete Rolle bei der direkten Bekämpfung, bei den Frühwarnsystemen spielt sie allerdings die Hauptrolle. Sobald der Raketenstart geortet wurde, übernehmen allerdings die Radarsysteme die Aufklärung.
