die träger der royal navy werden nun ja doch wieder stovl-träger und man bleibt bei den f-35b.

hier kann man nun noch einen erklärungsversuch lesen warum man nun die entscheidung aus dem sdsr wieder zurück nimmt.
man fragt sich nur, soll man laut lachen oder nur noch den kopf schütteln.

ich zitiere mal aus dem sdsr von 2010 pdf:

As currently designed, the Queen Elizabeth will not be fully interoperable with key allies, since their naval jets could not land on it. Pursuit of closer partnership is a core strategic principle for the Strategic Defence and Security Review because it is clear that the UK will in most circumstances act militarily as part of a wider coalition. We will therefore install catapult and arrestor gear. This will delay the in-service date of the new carrier from 2016 to around 2020. But it will allow greater interoperability with US and French carriers and naval jets. [...]

The strike needs to be made more capable. Installing the catapult and arrestor will allow the UK to acquire the carrier-variant of Joint Strike Fighter ready to deploy on the converted carrier instead of the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant. This version of the jet has a longer range and greater payload: this, not large numbers of aircraft, is the critical requirement for precision strike operations in the future. [...] Overall, the carrier-variant of the JSF will be cheaper, reducing through-life costs by around 25%.

und jetzt lesen wir:

By choosing the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) model of the Joint Strike Fighter over the Carrier Variant that we had previously ordered for our two new aircraft carriers, the UK is significantly shortening the time it will take to deploy our maritime air power.

jetzt darf man die stovl für 2020 erwarten, nach dem sdsr hätte die aber schon 2016 fertig sein können. damals plante man noch die catobar version für 2020.

The cost of fitting catapults and arrestor gear (‘cats and traps’) to the Queen Elizabeth Class Carrier to operate CV aircraft has doubled from around £1BN to £2BN;

das die ganze geschichte mit der änderung auf catobar deutlich teurer würde haben eigentlich schon 2010 die spatzen von den dächern gepfiffen aber interessant finde ich, das man hier auf einmal nicht mehr mit "through-life costs" argumentiert. die frage, die vermutlich nie beantwortet wird ist, wieviele zusätzliche kosten jetzt völlig sinnloser weise durch das hin und her entstanden sind.

The STOVL aircraft offers the UK the ability to have an aircraft carrier available continuously. Although no decision on budgeting for crew and support costs will be taken until the next Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) in 2015, the second carrier would be able to provide capability while the first vessel is in maintenance.

den punkt versteh ich garnicht. auch bei der entscheidung für die catobar version war gab es keine abschließende entscheidung was mit dem zweiten träger passieren sollte. damals wie heute schiebt man das ins nächste sdsr. der einzige grund warum man jetzt wohl ehr auf den zweiten träger hoffen kann sind die geringeren kosten.

The UK will also benefit from full interoperability with the US Marine Corps and the Italian Navy – both of which operate the STOVL aircraft.

also doch noch kompatibel zu irgend jemandem. lustig nur, das man 2010 die sache ganz anders gesehen hat. unterm strich wird man von diesen "patnerschaften" wohl auch deutlich weniger profitieren als im klub der catobar-user.

Whilst it is true that the Carrier Variant offered greater range, this is not a crucial advantage - given our major investment in air-to-air refuelling - when weighed against the greater time to bring it into service, and the increasing cost. The balance has tipped back in favour of STOVL, which has distinct advantages of its own, such as versatility and agility.

fast schon ohne worte. so wird aus einem "critical requirement" auf eimal "not a crucial advantage". und das air-to-air-refulling ist da nur eine sehr schwache brücke, denn damit das argument überhaupt zieht wird die ja von land aus kommen müssen. das stellt ein stück weit aber den träger an sich in frage und funktioniert natürlich lange nicht überall.

naja jetzt kann man sich zumindest mal ernsthafte gedanken um den ersatz der aew sea-kings machen, hawkeyes braucht man jetzt jedenfalls nicht bestellen.
