WASHINGTON — The Pentagon's top transportation officer said Thursday that the Air Force needs new tanker airplanes that can also carry cargo and troops more than it needs additional Long Beach-built C-17 transport jets.
Air Force Gen. Norton Schwartz, chief of the U.S. Transportation Command, said the military already has enough aircraft to carry troops and weapons to any war zone. He cited the existing fleet of 112 C-5 Galaxy and 180 C-17 Globemaster transports and the availability of commercial airliners that could be rented in a crisis. ...
