ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The United Arab Emirates plans to procure a spy satellite.
UAE officials said the Defense Ministry has been examining a range of satellite platforms for the military. They said the satellite was meant to provide high-resolution remote-sensing image capability to monitor the entire Gulf region as well as neighboring states such as Iran and Iraq.
Currently, the UAE has contracted for images from a commercial satellite that does not belong to the emirates. Abu Dhabi has used a U.S.-based firm, Space Imaging Middle East, for the imagery source.
"We use these satellites to track the geographical development of the country," Maj. Ali Al Shehi, ground station manager at the Space Reconnaissance Center said. "They help us take photographs from space so we can view the different areas in the emirate and all the new projects and development that are taking place."
