Greek Cypriot hub for Med air traffic

Greek Cypriots recently laid the foundation stone for the new Lefkosa air traffic control center for Eurocontrol, which will control air traffic in the Mediterranean region.

Ankara criticized the Greek Cypriot administration move yesterday, saying Greek Cypriots have no right to represent Turkish Cypriots as well as the whole island. Turkey called for detailed information about the construction from Eurocontrol.

Eurocontrol is the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation. This civil and military organization which currently numbers 37 member states has as its primary objective the development of a seamless, pan-European Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. The achievement of this objective is a key element to the present and future challenges facing the aviation community, which are to cope with the forecast growth in air traffic, while maintaining a high level of safety, reducing costs, and respecting the environment.
