Why is Yimpaş affair important for AKP?

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül yesterday reacted against the linking of the Yimpaş allegations to the Justice and Development Party, a day after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had done the same. At a press conference he held upon his return from Moscow, Gül was confronted with questions about the matter, and he didn’t hide his annoyance at the debate.

Ankara warns Lebanon against oil exploration deal with Greek Cyprus

Turkey warned Lebanon on Tuesday not to press ahead with an oil and gas exploration deal signed with Greek Cyprus, hinting at Turkish decisiveness to protect the rights and interests of Turkey and northern Cyprus.

Stressing that the Turkish Cypriots also has rights on Cyprus' waters and that Greek Cyprus doesn't represent the whole island, the Turkish Foreign Ministry released a statement in which it noted that “the Greek Cypriot administration's laws or its bilateral agreements with the concerned countries have no validity for Turkey.”

Turkey warned Lebanon and Egypt on Tuesday not to press ahead with oil and gas exploration deals signed with the Greek Cypriots, saying Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots also have rights in the region.

Turkey is "determined to protect its rights and interests in the eastern Mediterranean and will not allow attempts to erode them," Turkey's Foreign Ministry warned in a statement.

Ankara disputes the Greek Cypriot claim to represent the whole island under the name "Republic of Cyprus" and officially only recognizes the Turkish Cypriot state in the north.

The Cyprus-Lebanon connection



The Cyprus issue has remained unresolved for decades because the issue is very important for everyone involved. Traditionally, the most concerned parties were the Turkish and Greek Cypriots, Turkey, Greece and the UK. However, when Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, the number and configuration of the sides changed. Now the EU is up against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) and Turkey. The substance of the Cyprus issue has changed and the definition of the issue by the parties has evolved. But Cyprus’ strategic importance has never faded.
Those who claimed that Turkey’s arguments about security on Cyprus were exaggerated and that its so-called strategic importance was manipulated in order to justify the presence of Turkish troops on the island have launched an initiative that will only legitimize Turkish arguments. Cyprus is strategically important for Turkey because of Turkey’s own security and Turkey has always argued that Cyprus constitutes the base for power politics in the Middle East. Moreover, Turkey has been accused of not taking the islanders’ wishes into consideration. Today the situation seems to be the opposite. Turkey cares about islanders’ future while others give priority to strategic concerns.
