As we predicted in Ankara recently when the joint Baker-Hamilton report on Iraq was released, it angered the Iraqi Kurds while it was welcomed by Ankara…

The report underlined Turkey's sensitivities on the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) presence in northern Iraq as well as on the future of Kirkuk. It also called for active contributions from the neighbors of Iraq to contribute to national reconciliation in Iraq.

Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who is also a prominent Kurdish leader, were both irked by the report because of several issues ranging from the Kirkuk issue to the right of the Kurds to manage the oil they discover in their regions. They were both in Baghdad and held marathon meetings to evaluate the report…

They rejected the report immediately in separate statements. They said the recommendations of the report are unacceptable and they will actively oppose it. Several other Iraqi groups were also highly critical of the report…
