'U.N. may Take Control of TRNC Ports'

Britain’s The Independent newspaper reported of a plan to transfer the control of ports in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the United Nations.

The transfer plan emerged through ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve a stand-off between the EU and Turkey, The Independent wrote, suggesting that the plan hopes to help to heal the 30-year rift over the divided Mediterranean island.

According to the plan currently being discussed, the UN could control key Northern Cypriot ports and airports, such as Famagusta, and goods would be shipped with U.N. paperwork and customs declarations, rather than those of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
