The current Israeli operation in Lebanon seeks to eliminate the threat of Hezbollah missiles on Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has been attacking targets used to launch missiles and Katyusha rockets at hospitals, old age homes and kindergartens in Israel. The operation is being legitimatized by claims that the Jewish state will no longer be trampled upon and that Hezbollah will no longer be allowed to exploit population centers to bomb Israeli citizens. In this regard the Israeli use of force has been justified and proportionate, considering the magnitude of the threat. However, considering the deaths of 150 Israelis, the 1,000 casualties, hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and scores of pounded villages in Lebanon and the fact that this war has not achieved its main goal, the only thing I can say is that for the first time in Israel's history the strategy, or perhaps the lack of a strategy, has brought nothing but suffering to both sides.
