CAIRO [MENL] -- Algeria and the United States have conducted a naval exercise.
U.S. officials said the exercise took place on June 7 and was meant to improve interoperability and demonstrate cooperation in securing the western Mediterranean. They said the exercise marked an increase in military relations between Algiers and Washington.
The exercise brought together the navy of Algeria and the coast guard of the United States. Vessels from both countries conducted maritime patrol missions in a test of their joint capabilities to monitor and board suspicious vehicles and prevent illegal migration.
U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Robert Wyner said Washington regards Algeria as a strategic partner in the war against terrorism. Wyner, commander of a coast guard vessel, told a briefing this week that Algeria would play a major role in U.S. efforts to bolster the stability of North Africa and counter the threat of Al Qaida.
