Parts of Syrian missile rain down on Hatay

Ankara said on Saturday that parts of a Syrian missile were found in a field near to the border of Syria shortly after an aerial explosion had occurred during a military training exercise. Residents of Golbasi and Mahmutlu villages in the southern province of Hatay said that the material had rained down on them and landed in their fields following a loud explosion that was heard from the sky.


There were no casualties during the incident and no damage caused.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry asked the Syrian ambassador to offer an explanation into the incident after paramilitary troops said that the parts of the object looked like they had come from a Syrian missile.

The ministry said in a statement: "Syria said in response that the incident occurred due to a technical fault during military training exercises, expressed the government's regret over the unintentional incident caused by individual error and apologised to the Turkish government."

"The incident in question is being evaluated in detail," the statement said.
