'Iran-EU showdown should be sound'

LONDON, April 29 (IranMania) - An expected showdown in Iran-EU nuclear talks on Friday in London should be more sound than fury as both sides feel the negotiations are basically on hold until after Iranian presidential elections in June, diplomats said.

"It is still not the end game. Look to June," a European diplomat close to the talks told AFP.

Another diplomat said the talks, expected to be in the evening, would be at the level of political directors of foreign ministries but held secretly and away from the press.

In Tehran on Thursday a key Iranian negotiator said the Islamic Republic was "very pessimistic" since the European Union has been dragging its feet.

Hossein Mussavian said: "Up until now and from the start of the process (in December), especially since the Paris meeting (March 23), the Europeans have not undertaken any serious step to bring it to a close."

Annan warns against strike on Iran

LONDON, April 29 (IranMania) - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan on Thursday cautioned against military action to punish Iran and said the Islamic republic was "cooperating" with the West on talks about incentives to limit its nuclear program.

"I don't think that a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities is on the cards," Annan said in a reply to questions on the possibility of action led by the United States.

"I also don't think there is any need also to take physical action against Iran. It would be unwise, very unwise," the UN chief said at the end of a four-day visit to India.

"Iran is cooperating with Germany, France and the United Kingdom fairly well and serious discussions are on which will produce results," the UN chief told a news conference.

Britain Rules Out Strikes On Iran

Britain said Wednesday it will not support any U.S. military action against Iran, signaling London preferred to diplomatically deal with Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Speaking at a conference on post-election British foreign policy at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Baroness Elizabeth Symons, minister for the Middle East in Prime Minister Tony Blair's Cabinet, denied the United States had a "project" of military action against Iran but that "absolutely, if there were, no we would not support them."

It is the first time a British minister has made such a categorical statement.
