Ignoring international concerns that Iran seeks to develop nuclear technology for the production of nuclear weapons and not simply for power generation, the Iranian Parliament has approved the construction of 20 new nuclear power plants with a total output capacity of 20gw. The nuclear plants will replace aging conventional power plants and will meet increased demand. Iran has an installed non nuclear power capacity of about 30gw, but electricity consumption is increasing by about 8% a year and demand cannot be met by existing power plants.
