India begins construction of aircraft carrier

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India began an eight-year project to build an aircraft carrier in its most ambitious military programme to date, officials said.

Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee launched the construction of the 37,500-tonne carrier at the state-run Cochin Shipyard in the southern state of Kerala, a naval spokesman said on Monday.

The carrier will carry 30 British- and Russian-made jet fighters as well as locally-designed light combat aircraft which took India more than 22 years to develop.

Federal Shipping Minister T.R. Balu said the ship-building yard would complete the project and hand over the carrier to the 137-ship Indian navy by 2012.

India successfully tests multi-target missile

India test-fired Tuesday a multi-target missile on its eastern coast, defence ministry officials said.
The Trishul (Trident) missile was fired at 1:00 pm (0730 GMT) from the testing site in Chandipur, 200 kilometres (125 miles) northeast of the Orissa state capital Bhubaneswar, the officials said.

An official said the test, the ninth since 2003, was successful.

The surface-to-air missile is powered by solid fuel and can target aircraft and counter sea-skimming missiles.

It is one of five developed by India since 1983 and can deliver a 15-kilogramme (33-pound) warhead up to 15 kilometres (7.5 miles) away.
