Zitat:The US Should Put an End to the PKK to Win Turkey Back'The Washington Institute:
A prominent think tank in the US, The Washington Institute announced Wednesday that if the US demands an end to anti-Americanism in Turkey, then they should increase activity against the terrorist organization, the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in return.
A report about how the US is viewed in Turkey stressed that Turks believe that the US does not respect them and suggests that both parties to strengthen their relations. Some recent public surveys have indicated that Turkey is among the countries with the highest anti-American sentiment and that this has drawn considerable attention in the US.
The Washington Institute's Turkey Program Director Soner Cagaptay prepared the report noting that the US should take some active measures in Northern Iraq against the PKK and, in return, the Turkish government should fight the opposition to the US in the country. The US's failure to act on the PKK issue has disappointed Ankara and the latest developments regarding Kurdish nationalism in Iraq have paved the way for "discontent" among Turks. The report recommends that the US help Turkey catch PKK leaders, destroy PKK's Europe network, and block its financial sources. The report reminds its readers that the majority of Turks were and are opposed to the Iraq war and that the fate of Kerkuk (Kirkuk) issue is very significant to them.
Within this context, the report warns that submitting the oil-rich city of Kirkuk to Kurds will ignite a reaction among the Turkish public. The importance of Turkish-American relations is also highlighted in the Institute's report along with the opinion that US support for Turkey will give Turkey a stronger hand in the European Union (EU) membership negotiations that will begin on October 3rd.
