TAI faces two options: remain Turkey's 'national' aerospace hub or seek an EU-inspired alliance for a more multinational role
ANKARA - Exclusive by TDN Defense Desk
Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TAI) is accepted as Turkey's aerospace giant, and until recently it was part of the U.S. defense giant Lockheed Martin family. However, the company now faces two options concerning its future: It will either merge with its Turkish parent company, TUSAŞ, the government-owned firm that recently penned a deal to acquire the 49 percent stake in TAI held by firms in the United States or enter into a partnership deal with Italy's Alenia Aeronautica SpA.
Although Lockheed Martin officials said the TUSAŞ purchase would “evolve the joint venture effort into a world-class aerospace company,” some U.S. industry sources questioned the wisdom of the Turkish move. Some say affiliation with the Lockheed Martin name may have attracted more international business at TAI.
