Turkey Renews Warning to Abizaid to Keep PKK Promise

Representatives from Turkey, the US, and Iraq are to convene in Ankara today to negotiate steps to destroy the existence of the terrorist organization The Kurdish People's Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. Turkey will ask the US to keep its promise that it would destroy all terrorist organizations in Iraq."

The US, however, maintains that the Iraqi presidential elections planned for January 30th is their priority and therefore are not entertaining plans to hold operations against PKK. The issue will also be raised during the negotiations to be attended by General John Abizaid, US Commander in the Middle East, in Ankara today.

Abizaid will meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and Second Chief of General Staff, General Ilker Basbug, on his two-day visit. The meetings will focus on the obstructing the PKK's financial and communication sources and sharing information about PKK activity. Iraq reports that armed intervention against the terrorist organization will only be considered once these precautions are taken. Osman Koruturk, Turkey's Special Representative to Iraq will represent the Turkish delegates, Laura Kennedy will represent the US, and Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Al Bayati of Iraq will represent Iraq in the meetings. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.zaman.com/?bl=international&alt=&trh=20050111&hn=15531">http://www.zaman.com/?bl=international& ... 1&hn=15531</a><!-- m -->
