NEW DELHI, Jan. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- India and Iran signed Friday a 25-year agreement under which Tehran will supply 7.5 million tons of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) annually from 2009.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed here by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and GAIL with the National Iranian Gas Export Corp.
The signing followed talks between Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and his Iranian counterpart Bijan Nzangeneh, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.
In return, India has been given stakes in the development of two oil fields in Iran -- at Yadavaran and Juseyr. While New Delhiwill invest 20 percent in Yadavaran equivalent to 60,000 barrels a day, in Juseyr it will have a 100 percent buy-back agreement.
According to the pact on the LNG deal, IOC and GAIL will take delivery of the Iranian gas and GAIL will be the nodal agency for the sale of gas in India, GAIL chairman and managing director Proshanto Banerjee said.
Aiyar said India's main concern was to buy the best possible quality gas at best possible prices.
He also said that an Iranian delegation would visit India on the eve of the Asian Gas Summit here February 14 for talks on delivery of Iranian gas by a pipeline at the India-Pakistan border.
The minister's comments mean that India may not participate in the proposed multi-billion dollar pipeline project but would be willing to buy the gas if it was delivered at its doorstep.
The minister added that India's gas requirements were expected to increase four-fold by 2020.
"Today our output is less than 100 million standard cubic meters, and the demand is expected to reach 400 million. Despite new discoveries in India, we will be in need of substantial quantities of gas," he said. Enditem
