Egitim-Sen: 200,000 more teachers needed
The 'free' primary schooling system costs parents TL 2 billion annually per student

The Educational Personnel Labor Union (Egitim-Sen) released a report on the Turkish educational system on Wednesday, two weeks before the start of the new school year.

According to the report, in order for the students to be educated in classrooms of 30, the ministry needs to employ 200,000 additional teachers and build 125,000 more classrooms.

The report was released to the public by Egitim-sen President Alaaddin Dincer, who accused the government of excessively intervention with the educational system.

The report noted that according to the Constitution primary school education was supposed to be free, but the annual cost of each student for parents was close to TL 2 billion.

The report noted that 16 percent of those who graduated from primary school failed to enroll in secondary schools, adding that 77 percent of students, parents and teachers were complaining of the lack of equal opportunity in Turkish educational system.

The report also said that the state of the system in the east of the country was especially bad. Only 50 percent of those who graduated from primary school enrolled in secondary school. The rate dropped to 49 percent in Agri, 48 in Van and Kars, 45 in Ardahan, 42 in Ordu and 40 percent in Bitlis.

The average number of pupils in a classroom at primary schools was 62 in Sanliurfa, 60 in Istanbul, 57 in Gaziantep and Diyarbakir, and 55 in Van.

ANKARA - Jalal Talabani, the leader of the Patriotic Union for Iraqi Kurdistan (PUK), said on Tuesday that they could provide escorts if Turkish drivers changed their route.

Talabani, who arrived in Turkish capital of Ankara, told reporters that he stopped by Turkey before his trip to Europe.

Answering a question on attacks on Turkish drivers in Iraq, Talabani said that they were ready to provide escorts if Turkish drivers changed their route.

Talabani stated that they could escort Turkish drivers till Baghdad if the drivers used Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk routes instead of Mosul. This escort could be provided by them, Iraqi security forces and police, he noted.
