Zitat:VT SEEKS TO BUILD ON RNO LINKS THROUGH PROJECT KHAREEF
VT (Vosper Thornycroft) Shipbuilding is looking to build on its long established relationship with the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) by supplying the next generation of bluewater patrol vessels to the expanding Gulf navy.
VT, which has built fast attack craft and corvettes for the RNO over the past two decades, has submitted a proposal for Project Khareef, a requirement for up to three Ocean Patrol Vessels to supplement Oman’s existing EEZ (Economic Exclusion Zone) resources.
The 79m. ship is a highl
y capable design that will be equipped to carry out protection duties in Omani waters, deterrent operations during times of tension, clandestine operations and other duties such as search and rescue, disaster relief and helicopter operations.
The design benefits from VT’s extensive experience in building corvettes and OPVs, most recently for the UK Royal Navy through its River Class ships. Like the River Class, the hull has a ram bow for improved seakeeping.
Other notable features include a high degree of stealth built into the design; facilities to operate the Westland Super Lynx helicopter; an innovative boat dock for the safe launch and recovery of a rigid inflatable boat.
VT Shipbuilding Export Director Peter Stirk says: “VT has been honoured to have helped the RNO to develop into the effective force that it is today. This latest OPV will enable the RNO to enhance its role in ensuring stability in the region.
“We are also keen to continue our close links with the RNO by offering them a significant role in working alongside VT in the design and through
-life support of these ships, helping them to develop their
capability, particularly in-country.”
Construction of the ships would be carried out at VT’s new state-of-the-art naval shipbuilding facilities at Portsmouth Naval Base which is set to guarantee new levels of productivity and quality.
Post-delivery support will be placed with VT’s proven Integrated Logistics Division which will provide full documentation, spares and ILS management services. The VT proposal also includes provision for a joint support team that will develop the capability for maintaining and refitting the ships in-country. Ship crew training will be carried out by VT joint venture Flagship Training.
Mr Stirk adds: “This is an important opportunity for VT Shipbuilding and we are delighted to have the full, exclusive support of the UK Government in our proposal. This will also manifest itself in extensive co-operation and support for the RNO from the UK Royal Navy, further developing the close links that exist between the UK and Oman.”
