The PLA Air Force (PLAAF) is experimentally converting some of its retired J-5 (MiG-17 Fresco) fighter into unmanned aerial vehicles (or more accurately cruise missiles), which can be used for suicide ground attack missions. At least one photo published by Chinese official media has confirmed the existence of such a project.

PROGRAMME
A Chinese licensed copy of the Soviet MiG-17 (NATO codename: Fresco), the J-5 is China’s first indigenously built jet fighter aircraft. A total of 767 examples have been built by Shenyang Aircraft Industry Company (SAC) between 1956 and 1959. The aircraft was completely retired from active service with the PLAAF and PLANAF in the 1980s, while its fighter-trainer variant JJ-5 is still flying as a primary jet trainer.
It is understood that some retired J-5s with some flight hours remaining are stored in a PLAAF maintenance and regeneration centre located in central China. These aircraft, though useless in modern air combat, could be tuned into low-cost, yet still effective cruise missiles with some simple modifications.
