ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey, seeking to expand options for its ailing defense industry, has signed a defense cooperation agreement with Chile.
The agreement could pave the way for joint defense ventures as well as training by the militaries of the two countries. Officials said Chile has also expressed interest in Turkish ground force systems.
"The agreement will help further improve the existing military cooperation between the two countries and create new opportunities for future," Turkish Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug said.
The government in Santiago was represented at the ceremony by visiting Chilean Defense Minister Michelle Bachelet. Ms. Bachelet, who met Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, said the defense agreement reflected strategic ties between Chile and Turkey.
