BAE Systems and Thales, the defence contractors, have been given another eight months to agree the terms of the multi-billion pound programme to build the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers.
The Government will this week announce that BAE and Thales, the preferred contractors to build the carriers, have been awarded a follow-on contract extending the assessment phase until the spring of next year. Defence industry executives say the Government is aiming to sign a final contract for the design and manufacture of the carriers at that point.
Despite the extended assessment phase - a final contract had been expected this spring - the Government is likely to reaffirm its commitment to meeting the original in-service date for the carriers of 2012 and 2015.
