POLITICO: France and Germany’s next-generation fighter jet project is ‘dead’

The long-troubled Future Combat Air System (FCAS) being developed between France, Germany and Spain is on the verge of collapse, four European officials in Paris and Berlin told POLITICO.
"An announcement that [the project] is over is more likely than a relaunch," an official familiar with French President Emmanuel Macron's thinking said Friday.
A French lawmaker who works on defense policy concurred separately.
"FCAS is dead, everyone knows it, but no one wants to say it," the lawmaker said.

Wir hatten zuletzt von der deutschen Seite gehört, dass Merz dem Kabinett mitgeteilt haben soll, dass FCAS tot sei. Französische Offizielle scheinen die Ansicht zu teilen.

Dass es bislang keiner öffentlich ausgesprochen hat, soll daran liegen, dass ein Abbruch ein schlechtes Signal sei.

Two European defense officials familiar with the talks told POLITICO that Berlin has quietly explored what a participation in the rival fighter jet program could look like.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed openness to Germany joining GCAP when Merz raised the idea of Berlin's potential participation in a meeting between the two last month.

Quellen von POLITICO stützen den Bericht aus italienischen Quellen von vor ein paar Tagen. Merz soll sich bei Meloni bezüglich eines potentiellen GCAP Beitritt erkundigt haben. Merz wolle wohl Optionen ausloten.

In Berlin sei man sich aber, ähnlich wie in Paris, ebenso nicht sicher, wie man das Ende von FCAS verkünden soll.
