Largest torpedo order boosts Europe’s 212CD submarine fleet TurDef
thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) have signed a framework agreement for the delivery of DM2A5 heavyweight torpedoes. The torpedoes will be delivered to the German-Norwegian 212CD class submarines. The agreement marks the largest torpedo order in the company’s history.
The agreement, signed in Koblenz, covers the development, production and delivery of the DM2A5 torpedoes. The press release has not disclosed the contract value and total volume.
The DM2A5 heavyweight torpedo is built on a Software Defined Defence architecture, which lets it quickly adapt to new threats. It has modular, battery-powered electric propulsion that is built for high speed and extended range with low acoustic signature. Advanced digital sonar lets the system work well in complicated and multi-target settings, while fibre-optic guidance gives the torpedo and launch platform high data rates and precise control over the distance between them.
